Calibration of electronic meters of autorickshaws and taxis is likely to start from June 1, and all meters will be tuned to the latest revision within 45 days thereafter.

The penalty too has been increased for erring auto and taxi drivers. Decision to increase the fine was taken on Monday during the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) meeting.

An official from the transport department said: "The entire re-calibration of meters of autos and taxis, along with testing, will have to be completed in 45 days. It is yet to be finalised about how many vehicles will be taken up daily."

When the fare was revised in August 2014, the transport department had called for vehicles depending upon the last digit of the registration number. At the time, during the first week, those numbers ending with 0 were taken up first, followed by 1-9.

State transport department is still working on the fare chart or table that will come into force from June 1. However, prior to the implementation, the state will seek approval from the Bombay high court to upwardly revise the fare.
There are around 1.06 lakh autos in Mumbai and 37,000 black-and-yellow taxis, apart from close to 6,000 fleet taxis.

Another official informed that changes have been made to the rule of suspending permit of auto and taxi owners. Henceforth, those owners who are renting out their vehicles to other drivers will not be penalised by way of suspension of permits.

An official said: "There are a total of 26 offences for which this measure was being taken. As per the decision taken by MMRTA, there will be a heavy penalty for drivers for 10-12 offences now."
Some of the offences include fare refusal, taking a detour or longer route to destination, rude behaviour by driver, not wearing badge, etc.
