The cyber crime police arrested a Byculla-based cable operator on Wednesday for broadcasting the pirated version of the recently released Marathi film Sairat on his network. Raju Jagannath Kamble, a resident of Dockyard Road, was arrested on the complaint made by the executive producer of the Essel Vision Production limited two days ago. The film production and marketing company has the theatrical rights for Sairat, which was released on April 29, said police.

According to the police, in the FIR, the complainant stated that on May 3, a senior executive of the company was informed by a film distributor that the film was available on various websites. The company employees then came across five such links. Subsequent probe made them suspect that the print, which went viral on the internet, could be the post-production copy or the censor copy.

"A few days ago, the complainant also came to know that the pirated version of the film was being widely broadcast on television through a cable channel. The complainant then took the screen-shots of the film running on TV and filed a complaint in this regard. Police probe revealed that a Byculla-based cable operator had downloaded the leaked version and was showing it on cable. Kamble was then arrested. He was released by the court on Thursday, on a bail of Rs30,000," said a police officer.

Also, Sairat director Nagraj Manjule approached the police top-brass on Tuesday to complain about the piracy.
