In a month's time, Veermata Jijabai Bhosale (VJB) zoo in Byculla will get a fully functional veterinary hospital to treat its animals. In fact, the zoo was under severe criticism by not only animal welfare activists but also members of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) for its old, rundown animal hospital that looked more like an abandoned garage.

According to zoo officials, the new hospital has been built at the same location where the earlier one existed and is spread around 8,000 square feet with eight wards and separate areas dedicated to carry out treatment of birds, small animals as well as large carnivores.

"We will now have a properly planned Operation Theatre as well as all important equipments needed like X-Ray, ultrasound devices, anaesthesia and others. In fact, till date the zoo lacked most of these facilities and relied on Bombay Veterinary College (BVC) but now with a modern hospital we will be able to not only diagnose but also treat animals quicker," said an official from the zoo.

Dr Sanjay Tripathi, director of the VJB zoo, said that they have already placed an order for the equipments and the hospital should be completely ready in a month's time. "The hospital will also have a diagnostic area where the vets can carry out blood and other sampling of animals and birds in the zoo premises itself without having to send samples outside and wait for reports. Next to the hospital there will also be a kitchen complex with separate area to store food for carnivores and herbivores," informed Tripathi.

According to a senior BMC official, all efforts are being taken to convert the zoo into a modern one. "Its a known fact that the zoo was in a pathetic shape but that is being changed gradually as we are going about the makeover project phase wise," said the official, adding that on Wednesday tenders for building 17 animal enclosures including that of lions, tigers, leopards and other animals was also floated.
