Byculla Muslims want parties to field community members for their constituency

Muslims voters from Byculla constituency have decided to approach all parties, including new entrant All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM), appealing them to field members of their community for the seat.

The decision was taken at a gathering of nearly 400 Muslim professionals and businessmen at Khilafat House at Byculla on Tuesday, said Aamir Idrisi, president of the Association of Muslim Professionals (AMP).

Idrisi said that at the meeting – Ahilyane Madanpura (The people of Madanpura) – most of the speakers expressed the need for Muslim candidates in constituencies where followers Islam comprise over 35 per cent of the population.

The congregation saw, Idrisi said, exchange of views between many eminent members the community and Muslim residents from Madanpura, Byculla, Ghodapdev, Mazgaon Dockyard Road, Mustafa Bazar, Rey Road, Agripada and Nagpada.

The voters have decided to set up a committee under the leadership of eminent advocate Mohammed Ali Khan to hold talks with parties.

"We would press for a written assurance from all parties that they would field a Muslim candidate here," said Khan. He said they would make it clear to Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM that Mumbai being a cosmopolitan city, Byculla Muslims would not want any use of divisive language during the elections.

At the meeting, most of the citizens talked of the need for well-educated candidates with sound background in social work. Many of the speakers said parties must give tickets to people with secular credential and who can take all sections of the society together for betterment of the constituency.
