Members of the Maharashtra Commission for the Protection of Child Rights visited the Byculla jail on Saturday afternoon to review the situation of children living with jail inmates. Osfficials visited the jail over allegations of inmates using children as human shields during riots that took place in June, a day after the murder of Warden Manjula Shetye.

According to the commission it has asked for the report from the police and jail in this regard, and the police have claimed that on the day of rioting in the jail, Indrani Mukerjea had instigated and suggested the inmates to use their children as human shield against the police due to which while taking action the children were used as shield and hence the police could not take action.

If the commission found it true it is likely to suggest government to take action against Mukerjea.

During the visit it has also been noticed that the safety and facilities for children in jail has been compromised. On the day of rioting no safety precautions were taken.
