Byculla fire headquarter celebrates fire service week

On Thursday, the Mumbai fire department's Byculla headquarters held a ceremony in order to mark the fire service week which is celebrated between April 14 and 20. The fire service week is celebrated in order to pay respect to the martyrs of the fire department.

BMC commissioner Ajoy Mehta, additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh, deputy municipal commissioner Rambhau Dhas, Actor Randeep Hooda, Prabhat Rahangdale, chief fire officer Mumbai fire brigade, Captain Joshi chaired the dias.

A rally was organised where the firemen paid condolences to the martyrs. Besides this, an audio-visual was screened to commemorate the martyrs. In addition to this, Mehta launched an informative helpline to spread awareness about the volunteering programme and recruitment programmes of the fire department.

Talking about the helpline, Mehta said, "the helpline will be of great help to the people to get information regarding fire safety and precautions. I urge people to take complete advantage of it."

Randeep Hooda, brand ambassador of the fire department, featured in the feature film in the role of a fireman promoting the volunteering programme. Sharing his experience, Hooda said, "It is a matter of pride for me to play a role of the real, unsung heroes."

Talking about further plans Rahangdale said, "we will soon start recruiting more women in the department. We would also launch a hoarding series to make people aware about the work of the fire department, our brand ambassador for this series would be Randeep Hooda."

April 14 is also celebrated to commemorate the martyrs who lost their lives during the 1944 Bombay explosion (also known as Great Bombay Fire). The incident killed around 800 to 1,300 people and left 80,000 people homeless. During this incident, as many as 71 firemen lost their lives while evacuating the people from the premises and dousing the fire.
