A 44-year-old autorickshaw driver, who was standing near his vehicle, was killed when a Toyota Fortuner crashed into him in Santa Cruz (West) on Monday night.
A 22-year-old college student, Adil Ali Mohammed Duberia, who was driving the Fortuner, was trying to overtake an autorickshaw, which was also going in the same direction.
Hiralal Verma, a resident of Indra Nagar slum of Vakola Pipe Line in Santa Cruz (East), had parked his auto in front of Punjab National Bank, and was standing on the road waiting for passengers.
“Duberia signalled the auto driver on the road to give space for his car to pass. But, the auto driver didn’t. Duberia lost control of the vehicle and rammed Verma, who was standing on the road,” said Arun Chavan, senior police inspector of Santa Cruz police station.
“After hitting Verma and his parked auto, Duberia’s car hit the road divider,” he added.
Passersby informed the police, who rushed to the spot and took Verma to hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. Verma’s family lives at his native place in Uttar Pradesh. Duberia, son of a businessman and a Carter Road resident, was arrested.
The police’s preliminary investigation, did not find Duberia drunk but his blood sample has been sent for medical examination. “We arrested Duberia for causing death due to rash and negligence driving,” said another officer.
