Bus driver mows down biker on Western Express Highway

The Jogeshwari police arrested a 37-year-old bus driver for allegedly mowing down a 29-year-old biker on the Western Express Highway (WEH) near Jogeshwari on Wednesday. The bus driver abandoned the bus and escaped, cops said.

According to Jogeshwari police, Mandar Ghag, a resident of Dahisar, was on his way to his office on his bike (MH 02 CU 1582) when Gautam Singh Chauhan, driving a bus (GJ14 Z 6050) with a few passengers onboard ran over him on the southbound lane of the WEH. Witnesses said the driver was veering recklessly. “The bus driver is at fault as he was driving rashly and speedily. After he hit the bike, it skidded, killing the rider,” said a police officer.

Senior Inspector Rajendra Nikam of  Jogeshwari police said, “We have registered a case under sections 304A (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.”

“The driver fled the spot but was identified through the bus registration number. He was let out on bail after being produced in a court,” said Nikam.
