Burglars made merry as citizens headed out of the city on a long holiday weekend. At least three burglaries were reported between Saturday and Sunday across the city.

The Pant Nagar police registered a case of house-breaking against unknown accused after burglars decamped with gold ornaments worth Rs7.25 lakh from a flat from Ghatkopar (East) during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday.

According to the police, the flat at Garodiya Nagar belong to one Ashok Patel. "The family had gone to Gujarat for a wedding function when accused broke into the flat," said a police officer. "The watchman of the building noticed the door open and informed the neighbours. Later, Patel's younger brother approached the police and registered a case." Interestingly, the burglars did not touch the jewellery worth Rs13 lakh which kept on top of the cupboard in a plastic bag.

In another incident, a flat at LBS Marg in Mulund was burgled on Sunday afternoon and the accused decamped with valuables worth Rs6 lakh. "The house belongs to one Avinash Shetty. Shetty and his family members had gone to his relatives' house in Goregaon when the robbery took place," said Prakash Mansukh, police inspector from Mulund police station.

A jewellery store in Dahisar was looted of gold and silver ornaments worth Rs12.53 lakh. The burglary was committed between Saturday night and Sunday morning and the burglars even dismantled the CCTVs to ensure that no clue is left behind. Interestingly, the security guard of the building where the store is located, is also missing from Sunday.

According to the MHB police, the incident took place at Kamal Jewellers in Pramila Nagar in Dahisar (West). The burglars gained entry into the shop by breaking the plywood on the rear wall of the shop. "We suspect that the burglary was carried out by an insider and they used gas cutters to break into the vault to steal 300 gm of gold ornaments and 15kg of silver ornaments," said an officer from MHB police station. He added: "The watchman of the building is missing since the burglary. He was hired just a month back and his antecedents were not checked by the building people."

The matter came to light when the shop owner, Roshanlal Prajapati, 27, arrived at the store around 10am when he noticed the broken wall. Prajapati, a Bhayander resident, then informed the police.
The MHB Colony police have registered a case of break-in.
