The graph of burglary and vehicle theft see an upward swing every year during the vacations as a majority of the residents go out of the city after their kids' exams. The police department of Navi Mumbai, therefore, has appealed to the residents to take requisite measures for avoiding such thefts.

In view of the increasing number of burglaries in their area, the Nerul police organised an awareness programme at DY Patil hospital auditorium on Sunday afternoon. More than 200 office bearers from several housing societies paticipated in the programme.

Senior police officers including deputy commissioner of police (zone I) Suresh Mengade advised the people not to take any chance before going out of the city. "It has been observed that such incidents increases every year in the months of March, April and May as the residents go on vacations locking their flats.

The criminals succeed because people do not use strong locks on their doors. The windows too are not properly secured and they too provide easy access," Mengade said.

"These criminals are very professional. They get into the houses, take whatever they want breaking locks of cupboards inside in no time and get away. The entire operation takes them not even 10 minutes," he said.

Sources from Navi Mumbai crime branch told dna of navi mumbai that burglary increased by 30% and vehicle theft by 35% during the vacations in 2013.

"Residents should keep their jwelleries and other valuables in their lockers instead of keeping at home before going on a vacation. CCTV cameras should be installed at every floor of the housing societies as a precautionary measure. Many a time the security guards of the building are also found involved in such cases. Therefore such guards should be taken only from authorized agencies and their photo-id proof should be submitted to the nearest police station," Mengade said.

Sangeeta Alphonso, senior police inspector from Nerul police station said, "People should always install steel doors in their flats and inform their neighbours whenever they go out of the city. They should switch on one of the lights in their flats. The culprits won't target their flats as they think there is someone in that flat when seeing lights though the windows."

"We are also consulting the members of Peace Committee and Mahila Dakshata Committee in our area and have sought their co-operation in solving such crimes. We are also distributing advisories among the residents of Nerul requesting the same. More such awareness programmes will be organised in other places of Nerul soon. We have also put posters across the town, for creating an awareness among the people," she added.
