Out of the 4600 imported bulletproof jackets, which the Maharashtra police had received in the aftermath of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai, 1430 jackets have failed the AK-47 bullet test. The state police have now asked the Kanpur-based bulletproof jacket manufacturing firm to supply fresh stock.

After the terror attacks in Mumbai, the state police faced a lot of criticism when ATS chief Hemant Karkare in the 2008 terror attacks was seen putting on the bulletproof vest in the last visuals before the jeep he was traveling in was attacked in South Mumbai.

The police department had ordered 5,000 bullet-proof vests from the Kanpur-based company, which also provides such jackets to other Central security forces. However, the police had received only 4600 pieces after manufacturing and Customs clearance charges, at a cost of Rs 17 crore.

According to sources, during the trials conducted at the Chandigarh-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory, only around 3,000 jackets passed the test, another official said, adding that the rest 1,430 jackets were rejected as AK-47 bullets pierced through them during the tests.

A senior police officer from the police department said, "We have asked the manufacturer to replace the 1,430 jackets with fresh stock. There will be no compromise on quality and standards of the bulletproof jackets and we will take delivery from the same manufacturer after testing those bulletproof jackets again," the official said.
