One person died, four were left injured and at least three others were trapped under the debris of a ground-plus-18 storied structure partly collapsed on Saturday evening. The building located at Chandivli in Andheri east was undergoing demolition work.

According to BMC’s Disaster Control Department, demolition work was underway at Crystal Business Park building, a vacated structure, on Saturday. While the top 11 floors of the building were already demolished, the work to demolish the remaining seven floors was ongoing when the mishap took place.

Four JCB’s were being used to carry out the demolition work on the seventh floor when one of the JCB came crashing down around 5.15 pm.

“It appears that due to the excessive weight of the JCB machines, the structure may have crumbled. The JCB came crashing down on the second floor. While one person died, four have been rescued and at least three more persons are believed to be trapped under the debris. At the time of the mishap, a total of 14 persons were carrying out the demolition work inside the building,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone X, ND Reddy told DNA.

Teams of Fire Brigade and Quick Response Vehicles were immediately rushed to the site and rescue operations were on till late Saturday night.

“A private contractor was appointed by the builder for carrying out demolition work and a new building was to be constructed at the spot. So far, we have registered an accident death report in the matter. Those injured were rushed to Rajawadi hospital. Our inquiry is on and necessary action will be taken after conducting a thorough inquiry,” said ND Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police.
