A fortnight after the brutal murder of three Dalit family members - Sanjay Jadhav, his wife Jayshree and their 20-year-old son Sunil -- at Ahmednagar, the elder brother of the deceased, Dilip Jadhav accused the police of delaying the probe and threatened to set himself on fire if the killers were not arrested.

The victims had gone missing, following which a search operation led to the discovery of their bodies chopped into pieces and thrown into a well in Javkheda in Ahmednagar district on October 22.

The incident led to widespread protests in the state and brought back memories of the horrific Khairlanji massacre where four members of a Dalit family were brutally murdered.

"I don't understand what is going on regarding the investigation. I feel helpless that nobody is helping out although we have given all information to the police. My brother did not have any enemies, we are at a loss as to why someone would murder him and his family," said Dilip.

"We are investigating this matter and are questioning people. We are yet to make an arrest in connection with this case," said Lakhmi Gautam, superintendent of police, Ahmednagar.

A driver, Dilip says his family members were running pillar to post to get some information about the investigation. "We are all co-operating with the police department but we are not getting any response from them. My brother was a farmer here and my nephew was studying dairy science in Mumbai. He had returned home for Diwali vacations."

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has already asked the director general of police (DGP) to probe this murder.

Vishnu Savra, minister of social justice, said, "The Jadhav family should get justice and a police investigation is on. As per the norm, they should get a compensation. On will discuss this issue with the CM of Wednesday."

As news of this brutality spread, various organizations staged protests in different parts of the state. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray visited the family on Saturday, along with senior leaders of the party, and announced monetary aid of Rs1 lakh for the family and also promised to raise the issue with Fadnavis.
