Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan has proved to be a huge hit with the nation. Taking cue from this, residents of Janki Kutir Society, Juhu, organised a cleanliness drive to clean up the Juhu market.

Ask any Juhu resident and they'd agree that the Juhu market is the dirtiest spot in their neighbourhood. The market place is unkempt, streets are littered and carry a peculiar stench thanks to the garbage that is left rotting in several areas. Mehjabeel Barwani, a Juhu-based activist and resident of Janki Kutir Society, says, "We're determined to clean the market and make it breathable. People never bothered about this place, so we decided to take it up ourselves."

A large group including residents of Janki Kutir Society, members of the Art of Living group and few officers from the K/West ward kick started the cleanliness drive that began at the Juhu market and ended at their society. The group also spoke to shopkeepers and vegetable stall owners as well as residents living nearby.

The drive saw participation from all age groups, especially the younger lot. Around 10–12 children participated in the early morning programme. Jhanvi Biyani, 9, shares, "I think we all should clean our societies. More and more people should come together so that we can have a cleaner nation." Looking at the enthusiasm shown by the society members, the group has now decided to conduct a clean-up drive every month.

Despite the hard work put in by the members, they had to face flak from a less-enthused lot, particularly residents of the Juhu Gaothan. The Gaothan residents criticised the initiative, saying that such drives won't change anything.
Vinay Singh, another Juhu-based activist, says, "Every time you try to do something good for everyone, someone tries to stop you. But we ignored them and continued with our work as that is the only way to bring about change."
