The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to appoint a panel of 18 structural auditors to carry out major repairs, rehabilitation and designs to municipal buildings in the city.

Officials from the planning and design department said that the panel of structural auditors will be appointed for three years and will help the civic body carry structural audits of buildings owned by the civic body. Most of the civic hospitals, markets, fire stations, staff quarters buildings have been constructed at least 30 years ago and are in a dilapidated condition.

“Though we have an in-house department to carry out structural audits, it is not sufficient to carry out the work given the number of buildings. So, the decision to appoint the panel with expertise in the field has been taken,” said a senior civic official.

The official added that it will help increase the life of buildings owned by the civic body. “The city environment has corroded steel used for construction of buildings and has resulted in need for major repairs to buildings,” added the official.

The auditors will undertake site-inspection, checking structural stability, preparing designs and estimates for repairs besides other tasks.
