The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided join hands with non-government organisations (NGOs) to tackle the mosquito menace set to boom in Mumbai during monsoon.

According to information, the pest control department of the civic body — which last year had started training citizens on how to detect breeding spots for mosquitoes — has now hired help of the NGOs to combat mosquito breeding and disease spread issue. The department has already started the service of NGOs in three wards after securing a financial provision of Rs 41.63 lakh for the six month project.

The NGOs will conduct multiple mosquito-detection drives in attempts to locate major indoor and outdoor breeding spots. Last year, 60% of mosquito breeding spots were found in high-rises, compared to 40% in slum pockets. "The NGO workers will communicate, visit and conduct drives at residents associations and housing societies, urging them to appoint "mosquito breeding detectors" in their localities," a BMC officer from the pest control department explained.

As per information, the department has already hired the services of Pranjal Seva Sahakari Sanstha in the Kandivli area. Around 14 volunteers will be conducting the drive at the cost of Rs 13 lakh. Similarly, work orders have also been issued to NGOs in Andheri east and west regions wherein 30 volunteers will be employed at a cost of Rs 28 lakh.

Meanwhile, the officer claimed that, the two-folded programme — visit as well as training — was been shouldered by NGOs due to lack of staff in the department, which is cornered during every monsoon. The department, meanwhile, has chalked out regions which are well known to house breeding of mosquitoes. These include Kalachowki, Byculla, Agripada, Nagpada, Oshiwara, Bandra, Khar, Santa Cruz, Jogeshwari, Goregaon and Malad.
