Nearly two weeks after the civic improvement committee deferred its decision on the proposed parking policy for city, group leaders in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) approved the same on Wednesday.
The leaders (heads of all the parties in the BMC) also instructed the municipal administration to put the policy on BMC’s official website www.mcgm.gov.in to seek public opinion before finalising it. However, the corporators, before giving their nod, ordered the roads department to make certain changes in the policy.
Contrary to objections raised by the committee members, the group leaders recommended a hike in per-hour parking charges. They recommended allowing mechanised parking wherever possible in city as per the development control rules. On providing residents permit to park on the street, which was proposed for the first time, the corporators demanded that the BMC create a mechanism wherein illegal on-street parking is curbed during the day.
The leaders also suggested that the department allow parking at night at nearby malls/theatres/multi-level parking slots under section 33(24) of DCR in areas where residents lack captive parking. Such parking, however, should be offered at residential rates, they added.
“Compared with other major cities in the country, parking charges in Mumbai are less. So, we suggested increasing the rate wherever required. We have ordered the administration to incorporate changes suggested in the proposal and move it before the improvement committee.
Once the committee sanctions it, the same should be put online to seek public opinion,” mayor Sunil Prabhu said.
