You could be prosecuted if mosquitoes are found breeding in your house! BMC has decided to recommend arresting people in whose houses mosquitoes are found breeding.

Dr Suhasini Nagda, director, medical education and major hospitals in BMC, on Thursday said the civic body had decided to recommend punitive measures to check dengue.

"Mosquitoes breeding in one's house can harm others. Since this is a public nuisance, we are going to recommend arresting people responsible for this," Nagda said. "We will serve show cause notice on such people, and if they keep faltering, they will be prosecuted."

High-risk areas
The civic body has confirmed 620 cases of dengue since January. H-East (Bandra East), H-West (Bandra West), G-South (Worli), E (Byculla) and N (Ghatkopar) wards have been identified as high risk areas.
Members of the standing committee however, expressed doubt about the figures. "In L-ward alone, there are 164 suspected patients. Of these, 34 are confirmed dengue cases. So we feel the number of dengue patient is higher than what we are being told," Anuradha Pednekar, Sena corporator from Kurla, said.

Notifiable disease
BMC has decided to move a proposal asking the govt to declare dengue a notifiable disease. It has written to the government in this regard in the past too. But there was no response. "We have decided to write again," civic chief Sitaram Kunte told dna.
Once the disease is notified, it'll become mandatory for all hospitals and laboratory managers to report to BMC every day on dengue complaints.

Action taken on dengue
BMC has undertaken public awareness campaigns on dengue. "We have already circulated one lakh posters. There are four types of dengue mosquitoes. Two of them (types) are causing concern in Mumbai. We are apprising people on measures to be taken to check mosquito menace. There is no medicine for dengue. It weakens ones bones and reduces platelet count. Drinking water and taking rest are necessary," Nagda said.
