Five students from a Thane school have become energy champions at the age of 14.

The former president of India APJ Abdul Kalam awarded the Lok Puram Public School kids gold medals at the National Science Congress contest for taking green steps that reduced their school electricity bill by a whopping Rs40,000. The event was part of the Tata Power Club Enerji School Conservation programme.

Over two years, class IX students Shaunak Salvi, Abhishek Uphadyay, Rohit Doraiswamy, Atharva Manurkar and Vedas Kulkarni reduced the school’s energy consumption by replacing tube lights with CFL lights and CRT computer monitors with LCD screens.

“Many people think that using environment-friendly alternatives to conserve energy is expensive. We just wanted to show them how simple it is,’’ said Salvi.

The students found that the 203 tube lights in their school contributed to 71 units of consumption per day. So, they replaced 85 tube lights with CFL’s, thus saving 10.2 units per day. Similarly, the 26 CRT monitors were replaced with LCD screens bringing down the power consumption by 48 units. Also, four of the tube lights have been fitted with reflectors to reduce wastage.

For the November-December 2011 duration, the school’s electricity bill was Rs71,000. This was reduced to Rs32,000 from January 2012 after the students adopted these steps to save electricity. The students have also suggested to the authorities to switch from five-blade fans to smaller three- or four-blade fans to further reduce the amount.

“These steps can be adopted by households and shopkeepers as well,’’ he added.

Like Lok Puram school, over 200 city schools have started similar programmes. It includes Queen Mary School in Grant Road, Ryan International School in Malad, Farooqui Girls School in Jogeshwari and NL Dalmia School in Dahisar. The club along with students have been able to sensitise over 2 million citizens and saved around 3.4 million units of electricity till date. This is enough to light up 1,496 houses for a year.
