Get ready to pay more for your commute on Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) buses from today. The transporter has revised its rates upward, with the minimum fare now up by Re1.
As per the revised tariff, which will be in force till March 31, the rate for commute up to 2km on ordinary and limited buses will be Rs7, while it is Rs10 for distances between 2km and 4km.
Mumbaikars travelling between 4km and 6-km will have to pay Rs13 as per the revised structure. The next slabs are of Rs16-20-25-30 (up to 30 km).
The fare for express services starts from Rs8 for the minimum 2km. The next set of rates are Rs12-16-20-25-30 (up to 20 km). Beyond 20km, the fare for slab of 10km will be Rs10. Commuters on AC buses will have to shell out more, with minimum fare being Rs25.
As BEST buses are not exempted from tolls, commuters travelling in bus routes crossing toll posts will have to shell out even more. While Re 1 will be charged to passengers on ordinary, limited and express buses, Rs10 will be recovered from commuters on AC buses.
Even prices of various bus pass schemes provided by BEST have been revised northward.
Officials said the hike in ticket rates stems from the losses that the undertaking has been incurring in running the buses. They said repeated increases in diesel prices that had happened earlier had adversely affected its balance sheet. The next fare hike is now scheduled on April 1.
