Motorists should brace themselves for another traffic jam on the Western Express Highway (WEH) this weekend since the south-bound lanes of Thakur Complex flyover at Kandivali will be shut for repairs over the next two days.

"An application, which has now been cleared, was made to the Mumbai Traffic Police for permission to work on fixing an expansion joint on this bridge," a Public Works Department (PWD) official told dna.

Earlier this year, between January 26-29, the broken expansion joint was temporarily fixed with an iron plate. But the same had come off, thereby posing a risk to bikers and motorists. Thereafter, the authorities had bolted the metal plate, but this resulted in it becoming a speed-breaker on the bridge.

"Starting from midnight on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday, the south-bound lanes will be kept out of bounds for vehicles. This work will be carried out till early Monday morning. On Monday, the bridge will remain open for movement of traffic, but again — at midnight — it will be shut for a duration of six hours," said the PWD official.

This 592-metre-long flyover was constructed at a cost of Rs25 crore and work for it had commenced on November 24, 2005. It was inaugurated on January 26, 2009 by then Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who had flown to the flyover in a helicopter, for which the traffic movement on WEH had to be stopped.

Thakur Complex flyover is the fifth bridge on WEH that is undergoing repairs of expansion joints in recent times.

In the first week of June, the expansion joints on the Kalanagar flyover were replaced. Prior to that, the same type of repair was undertaken on Vakola flyover on the weekend starting April 23, 2016.

In June 2015, the south-bound carriageway of Dattapada Flyover was partially repaired due to damaged expansion joints. However, this toll collection agency did not complete the task of replacing all the problematic expansion joints.

In May 2014, for almost a month, repair work was carried out on south-bound lanes of Dindoshi Flyover after structural defects were noticed in October 2013.
