The Nehru Nagar police have arrested a 17-year-old employee of a commercial aquarium in Kurla for allegedly stealing 126 golden pearl arawana fish from the shop on January 16. The ornamental fish cost Rs1.2 lakh in the market.

The minor gained entry into the shop by using a duplicate key and stole fish by shifting them into a plastic bag. But many of the stolen fish died in the process of transferring them into the plastic bag since the accused had not used oxygen spray to keep them alive for a longer period of time.

"The accused is a relative of the owner of the shop and we believe that it was the handiwork of an insider as there were no signs of forced entry into the shop," said Suresh Bhavar, Senior police inspector from Nehru Nagar police station. He added: "The dead fish were thrown in garbage by the accused. We have recovered around nine fish that were still alive."
