Four months after delivering a preterm baby who weighed only 620 gm, a Bandra-based couple will finally take their bonny boy home, weighing a healthy 3.86 kg. Born at 22 weeks, Nirvaan is the country's tiniest surviving infant by gestational age maturity.

Nirvaan has been in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Surya Child Care, Santa Cruz, for 132 days. He will be discharged on Sunday. He was born via natural delivery on May 12, 2017 with a head circumference of 22 cm and length of 32 cm.

"Nirvaan means ultimate bliss," says his mother, "From the time he was born, I did not feel any negative vibes from him. He is special to us and these four months have been a struggle for us. He has undergone few surgeries too."

"At first, I thought a 22-week pre-term baby may look like an alien," says his father. "I was worried whether his features would be fully formed. However, he is like any normal baby. After discharge, we have to take precautionary measures to keep infections away."

The couple has requested anonymity. Dr. Bhupendra Avasthi, director of Surya Child Care, said "Nirvaan had immature lungs and required ventilator support right from the labour room up till 12 weeks.

Multiple doses of surfactant injections were instilled into the breathing tube to expand his lungs. A month long steroid treatment was also needed to help him breathe on his own."

His other organs also needed special attention. "Multidisciplinary management in the form of heart and brain scans, bone integrity checks, hearing assessment, skin care, and physiotherapy was required," Dr Avasthi, added.
