A 19-year-old youth attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze on the road outside his residence in Borivli (W). The victim is undergoing treatment and his condition is believed to be critical. According to the police, the youth took the step under the influence of alcohol.
Who is the youth?
Siddhu Umrao Wali works as a private bus cleaner, and lives with his parents and two siblings. His mother is housemaid and father, watchman.
When did the incident happen?
It occurred on Eksar Road, near St Rock's College, at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday. Wali was standing on the road outside his house and his mother and sister were at home when he suddenly poured kerosene on himself.
How did he self immolate?
P Gangurde, PSI of MHB Colony police said, “He found a bottle of kerosene and poured it on himself. According to his family, he was extremely drunk and did not know what he was doing. He then lit a match and threw it on himself.”
How did his suicide bid get foiled?
The officer added that it happened in a matter of seconds and his family couldn't stop him. Following this, passersby and neighbours gathered and try to douse the flames. He was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital.
Was there a clear motive?
Wali's family told police that he is an alcoholic and was aggressive by nature, but did not have any fights prior to the incident.
“His parents believe that he was not in his senses when he did this, and he took the step in the spur of moment under the influence of alcohol. They do not believe there was any particular reason for him to take the step. We have taken statements from his family. We are yet to take statements of the victim,” added Gangurde.
The road forward
“The youth has sustained 90% burn injuries and his condition is critical,” informed Gangurde. The MHB police colony police which is investigating the matter has not registered any case yet.
