Western Railway authorities pressuring the railway police to get cracking on the spate of chain-snatching incidents at Borivli station seems to have worked.

What's the status now?
After the station saw 21 cases of chain-snatching between August 5 and November 17, with gold worth Rs8.29 lakh being stolen, the criminals seem to have retreated. Since November 17, railway authorities said there have been no cases of chain-snatching at Borivli station.
The last incident, which took place on November 17, was the biggest in terms of value, with the chain costing Rs1,52,500. And it happened around 8.40am, right in the middle of morning rush hour, when the station sees massive footfalls.

What could've led to cases going down?
As reported by dna on November 21, the situation had got so worrying that Railway Protection Force senior commandant Anand Vijay Jha had to send a demi-official letter (DO in bureaucratic parlance) to his railway police counterpart, deputy commissioner Deepak Devraj.
A DO is an official communication which asks the official to personally look into the matter and act on its at the earliest.
However, railway sources said the railway police had not responded to the DO officially, but looking at the results on the ground, it seems they got working on it without delay.

Officialspeak
"It is good to see that the railway police have acted promptly. But the fact that it requires letters to get action is not the best way forward. The good part is that people can commute peacefully now. Hopefully, the railway police will continue its vigil in the same manner," said a senior railway official.
