Is Borivli station the new chain-snatching capital of the suburban railway system? At least, the railway administration believes so!

Senior Western Railway officials told dna that with 21 cases of chain-snatching registered in the past four months at Borivli station, the situation was getting uncomfortable. They have now asked railway police, under whose jurisdiction such crimes fall, to act quickly.

The total cost of chains lost, as per railway police records, is more than Rs 7 lakh, said officials.

The latest incident was around 8.40am on Monday when a chain valued at Rs 152,500 (the biggest so far in terms of value) was snatched. The one on November 11 saw a chain worth Rs 70,000 being snatched. The total value of these 21 cases stood at Rs 8.29 lakh, said officials.

Speaking to dna, Anand Vijay Jha, senior divisional security commissioner, WR Railway Protection Force, said: "The situation in Borivli station is becoming very uncomfortable. We have written a demi-official letter (DO in bureaucratic parlance) to the railway police to look into the matter. We have also increased deployment of RPF personnel at the station."

Unlike in the city where most chain-snatching victims are women, in eight of the 19 cases here, victims were men (records with dna).

Railway police statistics (which are shared with railway bureaucracy for it to send reports to the ministry) show that on certain days there have been more than one case at the station. And trend shows that chain snatching takes place even during peak morning rush hour.

The most obvious reasons seem to the be jump in gold prices, and also the fact that Borivli station is among the most crowded on the suburban network. The fact that the civil areas bordering the station are extremely congested, allowing chain-snatchers to melt into the urban melee, could be another reason, feel officials.

When contacted, railway police commissioner Ravindra Singhal said he would have to study the situation in detail before offering any comment.
