People visiting the Borivli Regional Transport Office (RTO) are up in arms against the transport department over the lack of basic facilities at Mumbai's busiest transport office.
The RTO located at Kandarpada Dahisar, which sees the highest footfalls, has people standing in long queues in the blazing heat that too without any overhead shade or seating areas. The lack of space inside the office also left those standing inside uncomfortable.
Calling it worse than even a rundown garage, Neha Sharma who went with her senior citizen mother to apply for her driving license said that they both were standing in the blazing heat for over an hour. "We were left with a splitting headache due to the heat and when we asked officials about why was there no shed they had no reply. So many people were complaining. It is surprising that the transport department is least bothered about the discomfort being caused to the public," she said.
Officials at the RTO complained that they themselves were working under miserable conditions. "We do not have proper offices and are working out of small barracks with an asbestos roof, which makes the entire place extremely hot. The past few months have been gruelling due to high temperatures," said a Motor Vehicle Inspector.
Harish Pandey, President of New Link Road Residents Forum who recently visited the RTO said it was the mistake of transport department to choose this site for a RTO office. "How can a RTO function from such a small place.
The lane leading to the RTO is narrow and has several residential structures. It has been taken over by RTO agents who block one side of the road while the other is blocked by vehicles creating a complete chaos," he said.
The Borivli RTO, located at Kandarpada, Dahisar is one of the busiest and sees extremely high footfalls
It handles vehicle-related work between Goregaon to Dahisar, and issues over 800 licenses
It also registers over 50 cars and 150 two wheelers apart from other vehicles
