Residents from Borivli east have raised a stink over BMC's installation of a garbage compactor on a busy narrow lane in their area. It has not only blanketed the area with a stench but also threatens the safety of pedestrians.

According to those staying in Abhinav Nagar in Borivali east, a couple of months ago, the BMC replaced a perennially overflowing garbage bin with a compactor machine. "Soon small garbage trucks from various areas began depositing garbage in the compactor. The mixed garbage and its moisture led to a stench. Moreover, the leachate from the garbage compression began leaking onto the road," said Umesh Kochrekar, a resident of the area. "After we complained to the BMC, the officials assured us that they will resolve the issue but we are sure it will soon be back to the same," he said.

Dr Shailaja Korday wrote a letter to the BMC clarifying that she was writing not just as an affected party but also as a medical practitioner. "The compactor is not emptied as often as it should be and as per BMC's own laws it was unlawful to transport and deposit untreated garbage in a public space," she wrote adding that the compactor creates ideal circumstances for the spread of deadly diseases.

Meanwhile, Hemant Gavankar, Secretary of Abhinav Nagar Co-operative Housing Society said that BMC had put lives of several pedestrians at risk. "It's a narrow and busy road. There are BEST and school bus stops close to the compactor. Pedestrians have to walk in the middle of the road to avoid the garbage," he said.
