Pointing out that revelations made by Uttar Pradesh governor Ram Naik in his recent book that he had information about underworld Don Dawood Ibrahim, Congress on Tuesday demanded filing of cases against him under sections 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) and 202 (Intentional omission to give information of offence by person bound to inform) of the Indian Penal Code.

Naik, in his recently published book Charaiveti Charaiveti (Keep Moving), has alleged that Bollywood star Govinda took help from Dawood Ibrahim to defeat him in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. He has claimed that Govinda is Dawood's friend and Hiten Thakur, another friend, helped the actor by terrorising voters during the elections from Mumbai North constituency.

Congress state unit spokesperson Sachin Savant on Tuesday said that if Naik had information about Dawood, then why he did not contact police during the elections? "He is a veteran politician and not a novice who did not understand what to do when such an information is received. It is not only strange but also surprising that a veteran like him is raising the issue of his defeat after 12 years," said Savant.

He said that Naik was Lok Sabha MP and has been an elected representative for years. "He had been a Union Minister. If he is raising such issues just for publicity of his book then it is not expected from a seasoned politician like him. Despite having information about Dawood's activities that to in his constituency and raising those on the anvil of his book release is not coincidental. It is for Naik to answer as to why there should not be any case filed against him under IPC section 201 and 202," he added.
