The Bombay high court will hear a public interest litigation (PIL) on January 5 seeking basic amenities like food, clothes, books and medical facilities for tribal girls in residential schools across Maharashtra.

Activist Vishnu Gavali, who filed the PIL, mentioned about it on Friday before vacation judge justice Gautam Patel. The judge has kept the matter for hearing before a regular court on January 5.

The petitioner, appearing in person, contended that from 2011 till date, the tribal development department has not provided essential items and security to tribal girl students. This should be done with immediate effect, he prayed.

The PIL said the girls' hostel at Ulhasnagar should be shifted immediately as the inmates have lodged complaints against the authorities alleging harassment.

The basic amenities mentioned in government resolutions of November 2011, April 2013 and June 2013 have not been provided to the inmates of tribal residential schools all over the state, the PIL alleged.

As a result, tribal students had gone on a hunger strike in places Karjat, Neral, Mahad, Pali, Pen, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Kalyan, Bhiwandi, Jawajar, Talasari, Wada, Vikramgad, Goregaon, Panvel, Shahpur, Murbad and Bordi, it claimed.
