The Bombay High Court will hear on Wednesday the petition filed by singer Ankit Tiwari seeking quashing of the rape case filed against him, claiming he is being framed.

Ankit, known for singing Sun Raha Hai Na from the film Aashiqui 2 which released last year, was arrested on May 8, 2014, by the Versova Police from his residence in Andheri (East) after a 28-year-old woman accused him of rape.

Ankit has approached the HC through advocate Ashok Sarogi, seeking that the FIR against him be quashed.

According to the complainant, he had raped her between October 2012 and December 2013. She said he had promised to marry her but went back on his word. Based on the complaint, the police have also arrested Ankit's elder brother Ankur for allegedly threatening the victim with dire consequences if she tried to get close to Ankit.

The victim lives in Andheri (West) with her eight-year-old daughter and younger sister. She works in an event management company.

The victim first approached the Versova police in February 2014 and gave a written complaint. The police registered a case on April 14 and Ankit was arrested on May 8. He was booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code — 376 (rape), 493 (cohabitation caused by a man deceitfully inducing a belief of lawful marriage), and 506(2) (criminal intimidation). Ankur was booked on the charge of criminal intimidation.

According to the police, the victim first met Ankit in her office through a common friend on the occasion of Durga Puja in October 2012, the two exchanged mobile phone numbers. They soon got into a relationship after Ankit promised to marry her.

She had alleged that he raped her during her sister's birthday party at her place after forcing her to consume alcohol. When she and her sister confronted him the next day, he promised to marry the victim soon. She even visited his native place in Uttar Pradesh, but his family is said to have expressed their disapproval at the relationship.
