Giving the state government four weeks time, the Bombay High Court has sought a reply on the action taken over the alleged cruelty caused to dogs and other animals at shelter homes in Raigad district as alleged by a resident of Andheri.

A division bench of Justice SC Dharmadhikari and Justice Bharati Dangre asked public prosecutor Prajakta Shinde to file a detailed reply to a PIL filed by dog lover Durga Rai.

As per the plea, Rai has a kennel in Karjat where she has sheltered stray dogs. It's when she visited two kennels in Karjat last year that she saw the terrible conditions the dogs were kept under by the owners. She attached pictures to support her claim and even registered a complaint with the local police but no action was taken.

The petition prays for action against the accused owners and release of the dogs and animals kept in unlivable conditions. It further requests the local Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to act and rescue the animals.
