The Bombay High Court on Monday issued notices to major public sector insurance companies, directing them to file their replies by April 27, on a petition filed by Sumitra Pednekar, the 72-year-old wife of former state minister Satish Pednekar who died of oral cancer in 2011.
Pednekar, along with several other eminent anti-tobacco crusaders, filed a public interest litigation seeking directions to divest their shareholdings from companies that are directly and indirectly engaged in tobacco businesses.
