In response to a PIL filed by Thane activist Vikrant Tawade, the Bombay High Court has issued notices to the TMC, Medical Council of India and Maharashtra Medical council. The PIL was about ongoing corruption, mismanagement and wastage of public money by the TMC at their Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hospital, Kalwa.

Tawade had filed a PIL (public interest litigation) in June in the Bombay HC regarding the large scale of corruption going on at the Kalwa hospital of TMC (Thane municipal corporation). The PIL came up for hearing in front of the judicial bench of justice Dr Manjula Chellur and M S Sonak.

In the PIL, Tawade alleges that in 2013, TMC inaugurated modular operation theater (OT) at the Kalwa hospital with much fanfare and over Rs13 crore were spent on the OT, which is in shambles and is not completely functional. "In the past three years, surgical equipments were bought by TMC to be used at the OT. Since the OT is not functional, we would like to know as the citizen of Thane, what happened to those equipments?" questioned Tawade.

In 1995-96, when the OT was not modular, an arthroscopy machine was bought for Rs20 lakh. "They were used five or six times at the hospital and were later sold off as junk," he alleges.
Moreover, the HIV center that was built on the ground floor of the hospital was never operational and was later constructed into casualty ward without permission.

Tawade also alleged mismanagement of affairs at the hospital, like selling of medicines at the hospital counter to outsider, non-issuance of tender for work worth more than Rs3000, no late fee to those contractors who deliver beyond the promised date, among others.

The matter will come up for hearing on October 24. TMC public relations officer Sandip Malvi remained unavailable for comments.
