Three leading singers- Shankar Mahadevan, Devaki Pandit and Jayateerth Mevundi- figured in this year's edition of the Bolava Vitthal concert, held at Shanmukhananda Auditorium, Sion, on Sunday.

The concert, which was well-attended, began with a Gajar. The three singers gave a rendition of 'Jai Jai Ram Krishna Hari'.

The Gajar was followed by Mahadevan's performance. His popular devotional songs 'Gananayakaya Ganadaivataya' and a Bhajan by Meerabai, 'Baaje re Muraliya' were a bit hit, followed by Abhangs.

Mahadevan sang the Abhangs in an unconventional style, did a medley of some of the most popular Abhangs, and was accompanied by an unusual choice of instruments- saxophone and synthesizer, which gave the devotional songs a different edge.

Mahadevan's performance was followed by that of Pandit's. She rendered 'Natha ghari mazha sakha Panduranga' and 'Tati ughada Dnyaneshwar' before concluding with the Abhang which gives the concert its name- Bolava Vitthal.

Mevundi gave the concluding performance by singing 'Visava Vitthala', 'Akaar Ukaar Makaar' and 'Rajas Sukumar' before concluding with his much-loved "Saubhagyada Lakshmi Baramma'.

In Thane, the concert was held at Gadkari Rangayatan. The concert began in traditional style with a Gajar by performers Suresh Wadkar, Ranjani-Gayatri and Jayateerth Mevundi. Wadkar's performance led to a rendition of the Abhangs such as 'Majhya Mana' and 'Vitthala Awadi'.

At the concert, a culture book on the Warkari Sampraday, was also released to the public.

The book documents the genre of Indian devotional music, bringing together various independent yet interlinked traditions and rituals involved in this form of music.

The book, which has a foreword by Vidyavachaspati Shankar Abhyankar and designs by internationally-reputed calligrapher Achyut Palav, was released by minister of state Prakash Javadekar, Vidyavachaspati Shankar Abhyankar and theatre veteran Dr Vijaya Mehta.
