There is panic in the newly formed Palghar district where five murders have been reported in a span of five days. Crimes are on the rise because there isn't enough police patrolling in sensitive stretches, activists say.
What's the last crime reported?
On Friday, the body of a youth was found in a trunk in Virar. This is the second crime of similar nature reported in the region. Five days ago, the body of an elderly woman was found in a trunk at Mira Road.
Where was the body found?
The body was found in a trunk on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway leading to Gujarat. And apparently, this stretch of the highway has become a (body) dumping zone for criminals as there is not enough police patrolling vans doing the rounds.
Has the youth been identified?
No, the youngster has not been identified. The body is that of a 25-30-year-old man. Virar police were informed about an abandoned black bag in the area with dogs loitering around it. When they reached the spot, the police found the body of a youngster wearing a black t-shirt and chequered half pants. He had a sports watch on his forehand.
What do the police say?
The police suspect he may have been killed and the body stashed inside the trunk and thrown out of a moving vehicle.
"We are looking at CCTV footage along the toll plazas and checking suspected vehicles. We suspect he was strangulated to death. The body has been sent for post mortem and reports are awaited," said a Virar police official.
"We have registered a case under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (destroying evidence). We are cross-checking man-missing complaints to see if he can be identified. We will also send the photo of the body to various police stations to try and identify him, said Sunil Mane, police inspector, Virar police station.
What are the other deaths reported?
Five days ago, the body of an elderly woman was found in a trunk in Mira Road. The police have arrested two relatives of the victim.
On Monday, two cases of murder were reported. In one case, the throat of a 36-year-old man was slashed for standing up against eve teasing. In the second incident on the day, a 35-year-old man was killed by a couple in a tiff over a misunderstanding.
Four days ago, a 28-year-old man was assaulted by four persons and after he died, his body was buried on a hilltop at Nalasopara.
In the fifth incident, a 28-year-old man was assaulted in Vikramgadh by two people after he demanded his ration card back. The man died and the two have been arrested under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 34 (common intent).
