Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission chairman and farmer leader Kishor Tiwari has written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asking to extend the farm loan waiver cut-off date from March 2016 to March 2019. This move will give relief to farmers who are reeling under the drought.

According to Tiwari, many farmers were denied the loan waiver scheme benefit on technical grounds. He said that these left out farmers either should be given the benefit of the loan waiver scheme or the crop insurance amount. Vasantrao Naik Sheti Swavalamban Mission is the minister for state rank committee constituted by the Maharashtra government.

Tiwari asked the CM Fadnavis to take action against the national banks which are not giving the crop loan to farmers ahead of the Kharif season. "The banks are harassing the farmers unnecessary. They are denying to offer fresh crop loan to farmers. The government should take action against the banks and its errant officials," he demanded.

Tiwari also pointed out that the 14 districts of Marathwada and Vidarbha are reeling under severe drought consecutively from the last three years. "Farmers are not getting the fair prices to their produces. There is huge agrarian distress and that caused the death of 800 farmers in the last three months in this region itself. Government need to step in immediately to undertake the various drought relief measures," he added. He said that the national banks are dilly-dallying while offering the crop loan.

"Farmers are in stress. Most of them had already paid the difference amount of total loan and waived off Rs 1.5 lakh. Still, the banks are not giving them a loan and most of the proposals have been rejected on technical grounds. There is huge confusion over the loan waiver scheme. Farmers were asked to collect and submit various unnecessary documents for fresh crop loan. Farmers are fed up by collecting such number of papers. They need the money to buy the seeds and fertilisers for upcoming season," he said

Vijay Jawandia, farmer leader and agriculture experts slammed the government for its loopholes ridden farm loan waiver scheme. "It has been more than the year till farmers are waiting for farm loan waiver scheme. In Lok Sabha also, the BJP led government likely to get the rude shock in rural Maharashtra because of its mishandling the farmer's issues. Tiwari is the part of the government so by doing this, they are trying to do the course correction ahead of assembly poll that is crucial for Fadnavis," Jawandia said.
