After a series of hurdles, the Kurar police nailed the BMW driver who fled after mowing down a 55-year-old man and killing him in Malad (East) last month. The arrested accused is a businessman identified as Kapil Gondolia, 30, who was traced to Chennai a few days ago.

On September 16, Gondolia mowed down Rasoram Kanojia, a laundry worker on the Western Express Highway near Shantaram Lake. Kanojia was walking with his brother when the speeding white BMW knocked his brother down. However, he could not note down the registration number and apart from the colour and make of the car, the cops did not have any other leads.

Jaychandra Kathe, senior PI of Kurar police, said, "It was difficult as the car's registration number was not recorded. We started checking the CCTV footage in several areas in Kandivli, Dahisar, Worli, etc. Based on the description of the driver given by the brother, we spotted the car through CCTV footage in Worli Seaface. The driver was identified by the brother." The registration number was recorded and the police began their search.

"The car was registered in Gujarat. We contacted the RTO there and a team was sent to Ahmadabad based on the address provided by them. However, he was not available at his residence," added Kathe.

The police then decided to inquire with the banks to find out if the occupant had purchased the car by loan. This is when the police were able to make the next move. A police officer said, "We got his details from a bank including his mobile number. He was in Chennai when we contacted him. We immediately summoned him to Mumbai in connection with the hit and run case."

Gondolia was arrested for causing death due to negligent and rash driving and was produced before a magistrate court. He was let out on bail.
