Raising awareness about the poor health facilities in the city-based public hospitals and shabby condition of the slum areas, Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) will be meeting the newly-elected Corporators from Bandra and Santacruz.

According to the members of BMMA, the residents have been facing various problems such as unavailability of medicines, dirty toilets, mistreatment by staff, etc at the Bandra-based Bhaba Hospital. Few women also complained about Muslim women being asked to take off their burkha in public.

Speaking about the demand, Sana Patel, member of BMMA, said, "We want our complaints to be addressed by the authority. Two months ago, my sister suffered problems during her pregnancy at Bhabha Hospital. One of the staff member started hitting her. Patients are treated by trainees or ward boys and sisters, instead of doctors."

As many women came forward to share their bad experiences, BMMA surveyed few public space facilities like toilets, hospitals, schools, and roads, last year.

Bharati Shetty, another BMMA member, said, "We surveyed few public spaces in 2015 and 2016 since we started receiving complaints from several women. When I first went to the ward officer, I was not able to get in touch with him to discuss the issues, and wrote a letter instead. We even approached various Corporators from the concerned areas, but very few responded and helped."

While the main focus is on Bhabha Hospital's poor facilities, the members are also concentrating on issues related to the areas they live in. Issues in areas such as Behrampada, Navpada, Pipeline, and Garibnagar include poor condition of public health centres, public toilets, and drainage systems to name a few.

Noorjehan Niaz, a member of BMMA said, "We now have the contact details of the newly-elected Corporators and shall soon get in touch with them and raise these issues."

Dr Pradeep Jadhav, Medical Superintendent, Bhabha Hospital, denied the complaints claimed by the BMMA members. He said, "I haven't received any complaints about poor facilities in the hospitals. We do maintain our stock of medicines, and are well maintained too. We haven't received any complaint about the behaviour of staff members either."
