Mumbai still doesn't have adequate security measures at the Gateway of India, which is prone to terror attacks. One of the reasons is that the BMC is yet to respond to several permissions sought by the city police to install proper security measures at the heritage spot.

The issue was raised at the standing committee meeting by leader of opposition in BMC Devendra Amberkar.

The proposed security plan includes installing 32 CCTVs and metal detectors, 8-ft high permanent barriers, baggage scanners and watch towers between the Gateway of India and Radio Club.

"Why is the BMC administration sitting on the proposal for so long?" asked Amberkar.

Additional municipal commissioner SVR Srinivas said that a comprehensive plan of installing 2,000 to 3,000 CCTVs across the city is anyway in process. "The Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee has objected to the proposal on constructing permanent structures at the heritage spot. We are in the process of planning the project," he said.
