The state government will allow Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to give its open spaces on adoption basis for it to be maintained. The statement by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday in the legislative assembly more or less clears the adoption policy passed by the civic body that allows it to do the same.

Soon after the policy was passed in BMC, Fadnavis had said that it would be put on hold as citizens feared that spaces would be encroached upon. The civic body had removed some of the clauses but citizens still opposed the adoption policy. Citizens have argued that BMC has enough money to maintain it.

In fact, citizens had welcomed the statement made by the chief minister and demanded that one by one all the open spaces that are with private bodies and politicians be taken back. They even conducted signature campaigns for the same. BJP's city chief Ashsih Shelar had even moved a bill stating that looking after open spaces be made mandatory for BMC as it is their obligatory duty.

In the legislative assembly on Tuesday, when Shelar sought response on open space reservation during question hour, Fadnavis stated that it can be looked after by those who will not use it for profit purposes. "If there is no fees charged, people are allowed free access and non-profit use is made of it when it is also maintained, then open spaces can be given," said Fadnavis.

On maintaining open spaces being obligatory duty of BMC, Fadnavis said, "It is true that it is BMC's obligatory duty to maintain open spaces. However, BMC is weighed down by a lot of other duties that it has. Hence, there is nothing wrong if open spaces are maintained by those who allow free access, maintain it without charge or profit," said Fadnavis.
