The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday officially washed its hands of the case of Dr Deepak Amrapurkar's death by stating that no BMC official is responsible for the incident.

On Friday Additional Municipal Commissioner Vijay Singhal submitted an inquiry report on Dr Amrapurkar's death which states that CCTV footage from the area shows that four to six people opened the manhole and left it uncovered.

The report states that police authorities need to investigate and take appropriate action against the group of people who, without any authority, opened the manhole leading to the doctor's death. The report also mentions that the BMC does not possess the Dr Amrapurkar's post-mortem report as Dadar police station did not issue an NOC to Sion hospital to share the same.

Singhal said, "We tried our best to access a copy of the report. We wrote to Additional Commissioner of Police and Sion Hospital also but Dr Amrapurkar's death being a judicial matter, the police could not give the NOC."

Sunil Deshmukh, Assistant Commissioner of Police said, "Why does the BMC need police permission to access a post-mortem report from their own hospital? We are not concerned with what the BMC report mentions, we will continue with our investigation in the case. We will submit our charge sheet in a few days."

So far, the police have arrested five men who reside in Elphinstone Road area for opening the manhole. They are currently out on bail.
