The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has warned the sweeping machine contractor to clean roads properly or face cancellation of their contract. The civic body is also monitoring the sweeping machine's speed through GPS system, and ensuring that roads are cleaned properly.

The civic administration received several complaints of litter lying unattended from residents of Marine Drive, Colaba and Churchgate in South Mumbai.

Vijay Singhal, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Eastern Suburbs), incharge of Solid Waste Management said that he too found roads were littered in many places. "I have given a final warning to contractor either clean roads properly or face contract termination.," said Singhal.

According to the civic official, the contractor was not using adequate number of sweeping machines to cover all the roads. "They are supposed to use four mechanized sweeping machines to clean around 200 km road everyday. However, it was found that the contractor was using less. The machine was cleaning around 110 to 120 km per day including in South Mumbai," said the official.

Each mechanized sweeping machine can clean around 50km road per day.

"In order to complete all roads assigned to clean, the contractor used to drive the vehicle at higher speed than permissible," said the official. He added that at a speed of 20 km per hour a road cannot be cleaned. The sweeping machine vehicle must run below 5km per hour to clean the road. However, with the installation of GPS, the civic body is able to track the vehicle speed.

"We have planned to clean most of the roads through mechanized sweeping machines. But, with this experience, we may not continue this in other wards," added the official.

The machine was started in South Mumbai in June-July. But, the BMC started receiving complaints within one month. Residents also complained that the machines are not brought in time to clean the road.
