The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has asked for an extension of two months to finalise the Draft Development Plan 2014-34 (DP), a blueprint of the city's development plan in years to come.

The plan was initially to be passed in the BMC general body meeting in March, but the newly elected corporators have sought an extension of two more months to study and understand the development plan before approving it.

The civic body's proposal was accepted by the state government and extension up to May 19, 2017, has been granted. However, at Monday's general body meeting, the Shiv Sena corporators proposed a further extension to finalise the plan on the grounds that they needed more time to study it, while the BJP members felt that there was no need for an extension.

The Congress and MNS corporators, however, supported the Sena. The proposal which was approved in the BMC house on the basis of majority will now be sent to urban development department of the state government. The planning committee had submitted the report on the plan in March to then Mayor Snehal Ambekar, after hearing 10,000 suggestions and objections.
