In order to ensure effective implementation of Swachha Bharat Abhiyan, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), planning authority for the city, has instructed other governing and semi-governing agencies to frame a five-year plan to execute the cleanliness drive.

The BMC, during a meeting held earlier this week, suggested that other agencies conduct cleanliness campaign every week at their respective office level.

The meeting was held to discuss ways to implement the programme launched by the Centre in an effective manner. Besides civic officials, representatives from Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), Mumbai Port Trust, Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers (RCF), Indian Oil, Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), JJ Hospital, Police, MHADA, PWD (Roads), MSRDC, SRA and others were present for the meeting.

"Segregation of wet and dry waste is important at residential quarters of the establishments. The agencies must look for setting up bio gas and refuse-to-manure projects. They should also perform shramdaan at their respective residential premises. The authorities concerned must also make available toilets for their women employees," municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte suggested.

Kunte also instructed the agencies to appoint a co-ordination officer to deal with the cleanliness campaign. The BMC has sought monthly reports from the agencies over implementation of the drive. "Such reports will help us co-ordinate better. If all the agencies work as a team, it will help us ensure effective execution of the programme," Kunte concluded.
