With an aim to provide clean uniform to civic schoolchildren, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon undertake a laundry project, wherein students' uniform will be washed in the schools itself. And whatever minor repairs the uniforms need will also be done in the schools. The project will be undertaken through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mode.

The dream project of Ritu Tawde, chairman of the BMC's education committee, it will be taken up in 437 civic schools across the city. Tawde said the project will help improve school standards as well, while protecting the children's self-esteem.

"Many a times it is observed that students' uniforms smell. Children studying in civic schools are from poor backgrounds and their parents don't have the time to wash their clothes as either they are busy doing odd jobs or they don't have the money to spend on detergents. We give 27 educational items for the entire year, along with two pairs of uniforms in the kit. So now, if the uniforms are washed for them, it will be another incentive for parents to send their children to schools," said Tawde.

The project will be carried out with the help of corporates that are keen to undertake such endeavours through their CSR programmes. Corporates have to spend 2% of their income for such community service projects each year.

Giving the details of the project, Tawde said two staffers, one from BMC's housekeeping department and the other through CSR, will handle the laundry at civic schools. Students will bring the previous day's pair of uniform which will be washed, dried and repaired, if needed, and then handed back to them before they leave for home.

"Corporates will be given space, besides a special subsidy, in the school premises for the laundry services, where they will be installing washing machines. The machines will be operated by solar energy and the water used for washing can be reused for flushing," said Tawde.

"One such pilot project is planned for Maneklal School in Ghatkopar. Hindustan Unilever has shown interest in the project," she said, adding that they were in talks with other interested companies so that at least 437 schools are covered.

"The aim is to ensure that all students come to school clean and confident. We have learnt that a few students don't come to school if their uniforms are not washed. They miss out on studies then," said a civic official from the education department. The official added that a detailed presentation will be made to the civic chief shortly.
