Even as World Toilet Day is set to be observed today, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is carrying out a survey to identify and fix lacunae.

As part of its drive, undertaken since November 7, the BMC has planned to survey 1,035 loos located across 24 administrative wards. Of these, 476 toilets are located in the island city (Sion to Colaba, Mahim to Colaba), while in eastern and western suburbs, 306 and 253 blocks respectively will be covered by the survey.

"The intention behind conducting the survey is to upgrade BMC toilets and ensure cleanliness. During the drive, we will figure out minor and major problems. We have circulated a 24-point to-do list to ward offices, which will conduct the survey," a senior civic official said, wishing not to be named.

The minor works include fixing electricity-related problems, broken windows, door, water supply, entrance ramps, sanitary issues, etc. The major works include repairing walls, ceiling and painting, etc.

"Junior officers (JOs) attached to the ward offices have been entrusted with the responsibility to carry out the survey. The ward offices are also holding meetings with NGOs which are supposed to maintain the toilets. If the problems are minor, those will be fixed in a few days. Major upgradation work will be completed in a month's time," the officer added.

Opposition leader Devendra Amberkar though insisted that the corporation make infrastructure of public toilets better. His demand comes in the wake of two separate incidents in Chembur and Goregaon in which blasts within septic tanks had claimed lives of two persons. "The most basic things include connecting the toilet to sewer lines wherever possible. And wherever there is a septic tank, it must have proper gas emission facilities. Or else, the efforts to fix lacunae will be in vain," Amberkar said.

The Congress corporator from Andheri also demanded the corporation to analyze frequency of use of toilets by public and upgrade infrastructure accordingly.
