After the traffic department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received administration approval to implement its new parking policy for organised parking of vehicles in the city, the civic body is taking rapid steps to implement the policy. In addition to 92 on-street parking sites earmarked in the city, the Mumbai traffic police have recently identified and given No Objection Certificates (NOC) for 489 parking sites across all 24 civic wards in Mumbai.

Ward officers will soon commission the on-street parking sites under the new parking rates of the parking policy. These 489 sites will be operational as a pilot project for six months, after which five-year contracts will be issued to private contractors for operation and maintenance of the sites where the pilot project proves successful.

The traffic department of the BMC has already started floating tenders to operate and manage the on-street and off-street parking lots which were identified earlier. Tenders for appointing contractors for these newly identified parking sites will be called soon.

"We have been told to start operation of the newly identified on-street parking sites. The on-street parking lots will be operated and managed by private contractors under the civic ward's supervision," said Harshad Kale, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, M West ward.

Amitesh Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) told DNA, "The survey was conducted last year, after which on-street parking sites were identified. We have given the list to the municipal corporation and they will operate it under the new parking policy".

...& ANALYSIS

  • After floating tenders for off-street parking lots, the BMC is now also focusing on-street parking sites under its new parking policy which has hiked parking rates. Although the civic body is receiving flak from some civic and transport activists, the BMC is moving ahead on implementing the new parking policy across the city. Civic officials say that Mumbai has 700 new cars plying on road everyday. To keep pace with this rapid rise, the city needs to create more parking spaces in an organised manner.
