To strengthen health care in civic hospitals, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to review the number of doctors working with civic hospitals on honorary post. It has found that many doctors attached with peripheral hospitals as honorary don't meet the number of hours they are supposed to be at the hospital, thereby affecting services.

Director of civic hospitals Dr SJ Nagda said, "We are strictly monitoring the hours spent by honorary doctors at BMC hospitals. It was brought to our notice that many doctors defaulted on working hours."

According to sources, a circular was sent to all honorary doctors to re-confirm if they want to continue with the post. "We had issues wherein the doctors on honorary posts wouldn't even come to work. We have now made them aware that they can give up the honorary post if they are not willing to come," said a medical superintendent of a peripheral hospital.

A doctor on honorary post is supposed to be in hospital between 9am and 12pm. "These are senior doctors who are supposed to guide the juniors. Besides the three-hour morning shift, they are also required to be in hospital in case of emergency/mass casualty and be available to guide juniors on phone," said a doctor.

Honorary doctors, however, feel that the civic body shouldn't just focus on the time they spend in BMC hospitals, it should also review their pay package.

The BMC has already started acting against its regular doctors after finding out that they were engaging in private practice during working hours. It had written to private hospitals, asking them to not allow their doctors to practice between 9am and 4pm. "We have been serious with the attendance of our regular doctors. In the past, we have even served show cause notice to them," said a senior health officer.
