To promote art and culture, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will allow the open art galleries, art corners in the open spaces of the city so that the budding artists, who cannot afford expensive spaces, can avail temporary permissions for their shows.

Senior civic officials said that the municipal corporation acknowledges the fact that the city has a strong bond with art and culture and as civic administration they have to encourage it. Revised Draft Development Plan has given special importance to art and culture in the city. Ramnath Jha, officer appointed for the revision of development plan, had said that civic authority does not want art and culture to cramp up in the city's museums and art galleries in the years to come. "Art and culture should be included as community force and should be a part of the city like hallmark of European cities," Jha added.

Open space on the sides of roads, chowks, gardens or other such open spaces which would not affect traffic movement would be specially made available for art, theatre, music, cinema or other such performing arts, where artists can express themselves. "One such experiment has been done on a footpath near Jehangir Art Gallery in A ward. Similarly in Tulsidas Kilachand Garden near Girgaum Chowpatty in D ward the budding singers get an opportunity to practice their skills by staging shows. These experiments are time tested and has been successful from quite some time," said a civic official.

Now, similar experiments will be replicated in different areas as per the requirements and possibilities. These provisions will be made in DP accordingly. "However, areas chosen will be close to educational institutes or any Heritage Structures. This project will give not only give encouragement to budding artists, but will actually help them to provide a formal platform for practising their art forms," said a senior civic official.
